My visual “movie” board that I created for my first DMP
I also encourage my clients to write down their Definite Major Purpose (DMP) and actually make an audio recording of it. It doesn’t have to be long, three to five minutes is plenty for most people, but I find that it’s good to have this information in as many formats as you can manage. Our goal with all of this is to bombard our mind with this purpose. To that end, I post copies of my board all around my house: in the bedroom, the bathroom, the kitchen, and the office. It’s even the wallpaper image on my computer and phone. I look at my purpose when I’m brushing my teeth or preparing dinner or getting ready to go to sleep. It might look a little weird to outsiders but this practice means that my subconscious mind is almost always exposed to these ideas. Just as my father embedded toxic things in my mind through sheer repetition, I can now use a similar tactic to embed positive ideas.
Returning to an idea over and over again (especially a positive idea) can actually be a comfort as you move through difficult times in your journey. For me, having the audio version of my movie board was invaluable. It meant that, wherever I went, I still had this tether to my ultimate goal. There were times in those early days when I had a setback or just felt that familiar anxiety creeping back in, and, in those moments, I would find a private place to listen to my recording. I even pulled my car off to the side of the road once to listen. Reinforcing those hopeful, purpose-driven thought patterns soothed me and encouraged me and allowed me to keep fighting against the challenges I faced.
Embedding your purpose in your subconscious mind is about more than just emotions, though, it also has a very practical value. Have you ever noticed that when you buy a new car, you suddenly start to notice other cars of the same make and model everywhere you go? That’s not an uncommon experience and, in fact, there’s even a term for it, the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon (or the slightly less Germanic-sounding “frequency illusion”). Our brains are great at spotting patterns; they are so great, in fact, that they will sometimes create patterns where none exist. That’s why people see faces on the moon or religious figures in slices of toast, and that’s why, when you just purchased a red truck, you suddenly see red trucks everywhere you look. The actual number of red trucks on the road has not changed; you have simply primed your brain to look for the ones that are there.
These general human tendencies can be troublesome; they can cause us to act in opposition to reason and logic, but if used correctly, they can also be enormously helpful. If you expose your subconscious mind to your purpose over and over again, your mind will begin looking for connections in the world around you.
